Shin Splints
Pain at the front lower half of your shin bone during and after exercise. May resolve after exercise but still be tender to touch.
The term “shin splints” is the generalised term often used to describe pain at the front or insides the shin bone. The pain is often caused when the muscles attached to the shin bone are excessively pulling becoming irritated and inflamed. Pain worsens with activity and tends to subside with rest, returning again with further activity. The causes of shin pain vary and may include poor training technique, excessive training, hard training surfaces, abnormal foot and leg alignment and inappropriate footwear for the sport or activity.
Excessive foot pronation is one of the main reasons shin splints occur, Formthotics™ work to minimise this foot movement. This means the muscles that were pulling on the shin bone are now supported and pain is reduced. Your podiatrist can confirm the diagnosis of your shin pain and provide treatment and advice. Rest and Icing the affected area are recommended until treatment has been sought.
